Everything You Need to Know About Facebook’s Data Center Revamp
As of April 26, 2017, Facebook’s Data Center in Fort Worth, Florida is about to get even bigger. Already worth $1 billion USD, the ink is barely dry on an agreement to expand the data campus by another 400,000 square feet. This lofty addition will cost Facebook an impressive $267 million. Alongside previous construction projects begun by Facebook in 2016, Fort Worth’s expansion will effectively triple the data center’s size from its original square footage!
Why the sudden need for such a drastic change? There are already six Facebook data centers in the USA, plus the three more facilities spread around the world. However, throughout the last few years, Facebook’s data needs have continued to grow substantially. Up until now, they’d been using a Classic Backbone (CBB) for both their user traffic and their internal server-to-server (M2M) traffic. That’s why in May 2017, Facebook announced that they’d launched an Express Backbone (EBB) to support their internal data. Facebook’s Classic Backbone and Express Backbone
With around 2.2 billion users, you can imagine that Facebook’s data centers are working hard 24/7. But what you might surprise you is how long they kept everything on a single wide-area network (WAN), otherwise known as a Classic Backbone (CBB). CBBs are perfect for smaller, lower-traffic sites, but they’re no match for the number of photos and videos being shared by users on Facebook. Consequently, the site was experiencing congestion between its networks, as M2M traffic often occurs in unpredictable bursts.
Facebook aims to remedy this situation with an Express Backbone (EBB). The EBB is designed to only handle the massive currents of M2M data between its nine data centers. Facebook’s CBB still exists, but now it’s devoted to servicing Facebook’s user traffic (i.e. status updates and photo uploads). Dividing up the flow of data will hopefully lead to a faster, more user-friendly website.
Started in 2016, the Express Backbone project was built and completed in under a year. It connects Facebook’s worldwide data centers, which are located across the USA, as well as in Sweden and Ireland.
