100% Renewable Energy in Welsh Data Center
So I’m not done talking about Wales, which works out well, since the Green Gorilla is currently pretty excited to hear news of a Welsh data center which is contracted to use 100% renewable energy.
The UK has much more of a focus on using resources cleanly and ethically than the US does – even in the lowliest of cafes you can get fair trade sugar, recycling is made very easy, it isn’t hard to find locally grown, organic foods, and renewable energy is a serious concern. It’s good to hear that green IT and the data center industry are doing well over there too.
The facility from Next Generation Data Ltd. just opened in Newport – and it’s not charging its clients extra for the clean energy. With a capacity of up to 19,000 racks in 750,000 square feet in a Tier 3 facility, being completely renewable is quite an undertaking. They’ve contracted with SmartestEnergy, a company which provides renewable energy through different kinds of gas as well as wind or water.
