Community Spotlight: Capes4Heroes
Everyone needs a superhero. It doesn’t matter if you’re the weight lifting champion of the world or the newest soldier in an ongoing struggle between humanity and disease. Big or small; people the world over deal with incurable diseases and creeping cancers. When the person fighting is a child? Well, we don’t have to sit here and wax poetic about how devastating and emotional that can be.
The internet is filled with inspirational and motivational stories of kids dealing with things way over their head with aplomb and sometimes charm. Of course not every story is as bright and cheery as social media can make it out to be. There are stories of heartache and woe, but there are people out there who are supporters, the people behind the fighters, helping them get back up and encouraging them to persevere.
One such organization of supporters is turning the tables though, making kids their own superheroes; recognizing the strength they have inside to keep fighting immune deficiencies, cancers, disabilities or mental challenges, the volunteers of Capes4Heroes are a special kind of supporter. Originally intended to lift the spirits of the children affected by these illnesses by giving them capes, Capes4Heroes (formerly Kiss the Toad Creations) has grown nationwide over the last few years. Starting out as a small cause with big dreams, they are now a community based non-profit that make and personalize superhero capes. Whether it is a life threatening illness, disability, or life struggle, Capes4Heroes wants to recognize and empower the true heroes among us, those who showcase their strength and courage each day, by rewarding them with a superhero cape
Starting out as just a Danville, CA mom looking to make a change in her own child’s life, Capes4Heroes has become a full blown NPO dedicated to bringing smiles and hope to children all over the country. Utilizing donated hours and hundreds of volunteers, they have been able to make and give out hundreds of handmade capes and certificates of superhero status. We here at Silverback have been moved by this organization for a while and have donated in the past. We hope you can take a moment to throw some time or much needed money towards the cause. Check out Capes4Heroes.com for more information and a link to donate!
