Naming #servers in your #datacenter
I took to social media earlier this week and asked a very simple question…
I got answers almost immediately. As I expected, we had a wide range of geek-lore responses, but a few surprised me. It seems the days of fanciful server names is gone in favor of a cold, utilitarian structure.
It seems the prevailing structure is now some variation of: Site Code – Function – Serial Number
My favorite fanciful answers were:
On a side note, SilverBack has used Characters from the Harry Potter Universe in the past. Weasley, Albus, Minerva, etc…but that was for workstations and file shares, not in the data center.
It’s sad to think we can’t be fanciful in the data center anymore. That said, with the rapid growth of computing and data centers, I suppose it does make sense to be a little more critical of how we name and manage our infrastructure.
I still miss my old personal mail server “Typhoon” and his good buddy “Earthquake” the file server.
